FAQ

What is CEFR?

CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — an international standard for describing language ability. It runs from A1 (complete beginner) to C2 (full mastery), and is widely used by language courses, exams, and textbooks across Europe and beyond.

On Lyrix, every song is assigned a CEFR level based on its vocabulary and grammar complexity, so you can find songs that match your current level of German.

Difficulty levels

A1
Beginner

Very simple everyday words, short sentences, heavy repetition. Easy to follow along even with minimal German.

A2
Elementary

Common vocabulary, basic grammar, still quite repetitive. A good starting point for learners.

B1
Intermediate

Broader vocabulary, some compound nouns and varied tenses. Comfortable for learners with a foundation.

B2
Upper Intermediate

Richer vocabulary, figurative language, more complex sentence structures. Rewarding for dedicated learners.

C1
Advanced

Literary or archaic German, unusual compounds, dense metaphors. Challenging even for fluent speakers.

C2
Mastery

Exceptionally complex language, highly poetic or abstract. Native-level comprehension required.

How is difficulty assigned?

Each song is evaluated by an AI model that reads the full lyrics and rates them on vocabulary range and grammatical complexity. The result is mapped to the closest CEFR level. Highly repetitive songs are adjusted downward since repeated phrases are easier to absorb.

Where do the lyrics come from?
